Betty Obuya

1st Annual Miss Intercultural Participant

By Betty Obuya, 1 July, 2009

I am greatly honoured to participate in the “Miss Intercultural Pageant 2009,” which will be held in Rockville, Maryland on 18 July. I am proud to be the delegate representing our beautiful country, Kenya. I am currently attending College in Dallas Texas, where I'm pursuing a degree in Nursing. I want to specialise in paediatrics since I enjoy working with children. I also have a passion for the beauty and fashion design industry of which I'm in the process of pursuing.

My greatest inspiration comes from my mother who has always taught me to dream with my eyes open. She is someone whose hindsight's have become my foresight's. I appreciate her raising me up in a Christian way of life because it has made an extreme impact in my life. I often come across stumbling blocks in my life, but these do not hold me back, they in fact make me grow stronger.

I enjoy travelling, making new friends and reading a good book or watching an interesting movie. I participated in the “Miss Kenya USA Pageant 2008,” which was held in Houston, Texas in May 2008 and I was the 1st runner up.

I have an ability to appreciate and find joy in almost any situation. I believe that the happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best out of everything that comes their way. That's what keeps me going day in and day out.

My future plans include establishing children's homes for the helpless orphans and shelters for the less fortunate in our society. My desire is to bring hope to the many hopeless families out there. I'm looking forward to be actively involved in charitable endeavours and also be a spokesperson for poverty alleviation. I believe that an individual as well as a society can make a difference in these peoples' lives by making donations in form of food, clothes, books, medical supplies or even sponsoring ones education. I could achieve this by forming an international organisation to help support the less fortunate people economically, socially and physically. Since poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom these strategies will help give these people a chance.
